The debate over the legalization of marijuana in Minnesota has been a pressing topic between residents for many years now, and the first law regarding medical cannabis has been on the books for 8 years.
Minnesota's medical program was very restrictive until recently when the state added cannabis flower and gummies to the list of products available for patients with access to medical dispensaries.
Now, medical marijuana patients in Minnesota can enjoy chews, gummies, flower, liquid, oils, and pills. This is certainly progress, but hopefully the state will allow for other forms to be considered. What About Recreational Marijuana?
Recreational marijuana is not currently legal in the State of Minnesota. There has been a lot of talk regarding its possible legalization in 2023, so we are crossing our fingers. If you support the legalization of cannabis, contact your lawmakers and let them know.
Some of the lawmakers say they think the bill that would legalize marijuana could pass this legislative session, and others say it might take a year or two for the bill to pass. Either way, its passage is inevitable.
The timing really depends on the amount of Republicans who will support it, especially the lawmakers.
How to Get a Medical Marijuana Certification in Minnesota
Even if recreational marijuana is legalized next year, it will take months or years for the program to become operational. So if you want to try marijuana for its many medicinal benefits, you will need to get a recommendation through a licensed physician.
How to get certified for medical marijuana in the State of Minnesota:
Find a licensed physician who can recommend marijuana to you. After your appointment with the physician, you will receive an email which will contain confirmation of your condition and a link to enroll online for the Medical Cannabis Registry.
Click the link to enroll and make sure to have your driver’s license or a valid ID on hand, as well as your government medical assistance plan document, your phone, and a routing number to pay the state fee. Once you pay the fee, your application will be reviewed, which can take up to 30 days.
Once your enrollment is approved, you will need to head to a dispensary to access your medicine. Click here for a complete list of dispensary locations. You should bring your ID, a list of your current medications, the visit summary from your health care practitioner, and payment.
And that’s it!
