Delta 8 THC has been increasing in popularity for the past few years nationwide, especially in states where marijuana is not legal. Delta 8 is a psychoactive cannabinoid found in marijuana sativa plants.
Delta 9 THC is the main psychoactive compound found in cannabis plants, and the chemical structure of delta 8 THC is similar. Both deltas get you “high”, but delta 8’s high is a bit more mild.
Delta 8 is legal in most states, since it is mostly extracted from hemp-derived CBD, but there is a lot of gray area there. The Agriculture and Nutrition Improvement Act of 2018 legalized hemp on a federal level but did not mention delta 8 whatsoever, which created a loophole.
Since there are no explicit laws against delta 8, consumers are vulnerable to many dangers. The market for delta 8 is unregulated and unsafe, with little to no valid research or testing on these products.
The Dangers of Delta 8
Since the delta 8 market is not regulated, consumers do not know what they are getting when they purchase these products. They are readily available in gas stations, vape shops, convenience stores, and even online.
There is no quality control for delta 8 products or their many harsh chemical ingredients at this time. About a dozen states have begun the process of banning these products due to the unsafe nature of them.
The FDA has not approved or evaluated delta 8, and they have received many reports of adverse reactions due to ingestion of these products. There is also concern about how these products are labeled.
Many times, delta 8 products will be labeled as a hemp product, so people may purchase them without knowing the product is psychoactive. Also, the packaging and language of many delta 8 products appeal to children, which is very problematic.
Some of the most common side effects of delta 8 include:
Confusion
Anxiety
Drowsiness
Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
Numbness
Fast heart rate (tachycardia)
Low blood pressure (hypotension)
